The main mission of the program has been to help refugees and asylees from countries ravaged by civil war recover from the effects of war trauma and torture. We treat the whole person by taking into account the person’s family, religion, motivation to work, values, and physical health as well as their symptoms of mental illness and / or traumatic stress.
Begun as a small program in 1978 to treat traumatized refugees coming to Oregon from the Vietnam War, the IPP has grown over the past 24 years to now serve a current caseload of close to 1000 trauma and torture victims from all over the world. The guiding philosophy throughout these 24 years has been to provide thorough, culturally sensitive psychiatric evaluation and treatment. Approximately 75 percent of the IPP’s participants suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder with symptoms such as nightmares, poor sleep, difficulty concentrating, irritability, fear and social withdrawal. Ten to fifteen percent suffer from psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia.
